Genghis Khan - and the Making of the Modern World

Imagine
A tribal born in India – say, a Bhil or Toda
who raised an army – not merely a tribal battalion
which defeated every rival kingdom in India
then conquered Persia, Egypt, China, Russia
and whose descendants ruled those nations as the Shah of Iran, Pharaoh of Egypt, Emperor of China, Czar of Russia!

That is what Genghis Khan accomplished. I used this metaphor or comparison, when I reviewed Jack Weatherford’s book “Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World,” for TieCon, a conference of Entrepreneurs, in Chennai, in November 2016. Before I explain why I chose this book, let us look at the author Weatherford’s metaphor.

Jack Weatherford’s metaphor

If USA were created not by educated merchants or rich plantation owners
but by an illiterate slave
who liberated his country from foreign rule
united the people
created an alphabet
wrote a constitution
established universal religious freedom
invented a new system of warfare
conquered all land from Canada to Brazil, and,
established a contiguous free market zone across continents…

that person – “illiterate slave” etc.. – would have equalled what Genghis Khan did!

It’s not easy to grasp all that (or believe even some of that) after one reading. And it clashes severely with our vague images of Genghis Khan or the Mongols of his time. Most people equate them with the most terrifying warriors in human history (which was probaly true), who beheaded thousands and razed cities (also true), and were the most savagely brutal and cruel people (false – Weatherford argues with examples, that so called civilized people of that time – Italians, Persians, Germans, Chinese etc – were far more cruel and brutal).

But look at some elements of that list again –
1.      Created an alphabet
2.      Wrote a constitutuion
3.      Established universal religious freedom
4.      Established a free market zone

Genghis Khan????!!! Really??? Alphabet, Constitution and free market are not usually associated with marauding empire builders, leave alone Genghis. But that simply shows the deep and historical bias that most historians have (and eagerly jumped upon by believing readers and peoples, proud of their own heroes). Most Westerners – Europeans - are quite eager to believe that Alexander the Great (whose record of genocide and destruction of cultures is rarely matched in history) brought civilization to the barbaric Asians. They also believe the same of the Roman Empire, European Colonialism of Africa Asia and South America (but not Atilla or Napoleon or Hitler or Stalin’s colonizations of Europe). Pakistani text books teach that Islam brought culture to India. India’s own history books while critical of earlier Islamic invasions, go into paroxysms of joy about the delights of Mughal rule, while also painting European colonialism in pure vileness. Twentieth century history according to Indian text books on history, is fifty terrible years of British rule when Congress was a noble sacrificing heroic opposition, followed by fifty glorious years of Congress rule overcoming all the terrible opposition parties and “foreign powers.” For context, these three perspectives on history may be of some interest.

You will have to read the book or at least, listen to the audio recording of my review for further details on Genghis Khan’s accomplishments. Actually I was struck by the subtitle of the book “and the Making of the Modern World.” Again, a phrase that one does not associate with the Mongols or Genghis. But then Weatherford is not the only historian who makes this claim regarding Genghis Khan.

Here are some other interesting facts:

1.     Did you know that Genghis Khan built more bridges than any other ruler in history?
2.     The Mongols made pants and trousers globally popular (the Europeans were early adopters, they used to wear togas and tunics and robes before that – Romans, Greeks, Crusaders, Goths).
3.     It was the collapse of the Mongol empire and the resulting massive inflation in Asian cottons, silks and spices, that prompted Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Magellan to find a sea route to India.
4.     The longest tale in Geoffrey Chaucer’s “Canterbury Tales” is about Genghis Khan!
5.     Genghis Khan exempted doctors, lawyers, scholars, teachers from tax. No democracy in the world has done or will ever do that. (Most Hindu kingdoms in India exempted doctors, teachers, barbers and priests from tax. There were no lawyers).

The Mongols defy almost every standard pattern in history, in the eyes of John Green, who did a marvelous series of ten minute videos on world history. “Except the Mongols,” is a standard phrase he uses, quite justifiably.

Do I agree with Weatherford that Genghis created the Modern World? No, I don’t. My views are closer to those of Vaclav Smil, who mocked this claim in his book “Creatingthe Twentieth Century.” I believe the modern world is the result of the Industrial Revolution, which was more important than all political and social revolutions combined. But the book is a marvel, I respect his claim – given the history of Genghis Khan before he conquered Mongolia, what he did after that was utterly astounding. And unparalleled.

The organizer of TieCon, V Chandrasekhar, an entrepreneur himself, is a friend who liked my other book reviews, and asked me to review two books for TieCon. The other book  I reviewed was Alan Beattie’s “False Economy.

Genghis Khan is an unusual person to interest entrepreneurs, I would have thought, but my review of this book drew nearly twice the crowd of my review of Beattie’s book about Economics. You can see Beattie’s video explaining his book here, the video of my book review in Tamil here and the audio of my TieCon book review of Beattie’s book here.

Aryabhata's sloka for pi

The Greek letter pi for the ratio between circumference of a circle and its diameter was given only in the 18th century by William Jones, a mathematician (father of the more famous Sir William "Oriental" Jones, founder of Asiatic Society of Bengal), 2000 years after the Greeks had realized that such a thing existed. We, or at least some mathematicians, only celebrate March 14 (3-14) somewhat recently after the American usage of month followed by date (3-14), rather than the British usage of date followed by month (14-3).

Incidentally the ratio for circumference to diameter was stated as a Sanskrit sloka by Aryabhata in the fifth century. I attach the sloka and its meaning in this JPEG here. Aryabhata knew it was not an EXACT number but an approximate number ( though he didn't know about irrational or transcendental numbers), so he used the word "aasannaH" which means "approximately".

Sculpture and Music – An Experimental Video

Please see this video then read this essay for explanation.

After I read Kalki’s historical novel Sivakamiyin Sabatham in 2000, I became fascinated with
sculptures and art in Indian temples, especially in Tamilnadu. When I visited Kailasanatha temple in Kanchipuram, commissioned by Rajasimha Pallava, for the first time in 2005, I was awestruck by the sheer beauty and variety of sculptures in that temple alone. In 2006, I was utterly amazed by the Kailasanatha temple in Ellora, Maharashtra, which is really a temple carved out of a hill. Over the last several years I have developed a deep interest in sculptures paintings and bronze idols, though Indian tradition rarely distinguishes among these.

While film music is quite popular in India, and classical music a little less so, classical art, especially sculpture and painting as preserved mostly in temples are almost unknown to the vast public, even those with strong cultural education. Most of what Indians think is artistic is very recent art by Indian standards – mostly after the fifteenth century. Strangely, artists and connoisseurs of one field rarely show interest in a different field – musicians, painters, novelists, dancers, sculptors, etc live in their own communities with rarely any interest or a very superficial overlap with other exponents or connoisseurs of other arts.

This video is an attempt to bridge that gap. It uses one of the most popular songs ofTamil cinema, from a movie made in the 1960s, which has marvelous lyrics and wonderful music. The song is about an episode from Thiruvilaiyaadal, the Sports of Siva. In this episode, an ordinary musician called Bana Bhattar, who is an ardent devotee of Siva is ordered by the Pandyan King, to compete with an arrogant but famous muscian called Hemanatha Bhagavathar, who demands of the King that he must turn over half the kingdom if he cannot find someone to match his skill. Bana Bhattar believes he is no match for the Bhagavathar, and begs Siva to help. Siva disguised as a woodcutter, under pretence of resting for the night on the porch outside the house where the Bhagavathar stays, sings a song, wherein Siva as the woodcutter, claims he is the Song, the Expression, the Master of Music and Dance, in fact, the Lord of Action and Movement and the Driving Force of all Creation. Utterly overwhelmed, the Bhagavathar sneaks out of town, humbled by sacred Madurai, city of Sundareshvara, where a woodcutter can not only sing beyong a famous musician’s imagination but can bring Nature to a stop or set it moving again.

What I love about this song is that the phrases Kannadasan uses so beautifully fit the various sculptures of Siva that adorn temples. For someone unfamiliar with Tamil, the sheer beauty of the ancient sculptures, and their breathtaking variety, would perhaps delight their senses. Especially for those who are familiar only with 20th century calendar portraits, film or TV serial depictions or pictures in Amar Chitra Katha comics, where Siva is invariably shown as a hermit clad in tiger skin, these pictures should kindle your curiosity.

Siva as Lord of Dance (Nataraja or Natesa) is well known to most of us, but perhaps not all the various dance poses – like Chatushra, Urdhva, GajaSamhara, Tri. But let me explain a few sculptures which are not self-explanatory.

1. Siva is often depicted playing the vina in several forms. The vina insculptures looks thin - very different from the modern vina, which was invented by Raghunatha Nayaka in Tanjavur in the 17th century.
2. Siva is rarely shown playing mridangam, except here, in Kazhugumalai, near Kovilpatti, about 120 km south of Madurai.
3. Siva teaches Tandu (तण्डुः), his first disciple, the art of dance, which is thence named Tandava after him (like Pandava from Pandu).
4. The 108 karanas (dance postures) of Natya Shastra composed my Bharata Muni, are depicted in the gopuram of the Chidambaram temple.
5. Siva has taught humility to several (including the Bhagavathar). I have used the sculptures of Siva humbling Ravana when he tried to lift Kailasa, and Siva humbling Kaala (Yama) to rescue Markandeya, after Siva dances on Kaala, as Kaala Samhaara Murthy.
6. Siva as Dakshinamurthy teaches Sanaka and three other rishis without uttering a word. Lions, deer and elephants assemble in peace to listen. All Creation is quietened when Siva is silent.
7. What better sculpture to show that Siva is the force inside all Life, than that of the Himalayas as Siva appears to grant the Pashupatha astra to Arjuna? Devas, Gandharvas, Nagas, Rishis, Humans, Kimpurushas, Kinnaras, the Mighty Ganga, Plant and Animals are all depicted in this magnificent Pallava panel called Arjuna’s Penance, at Mamallapuram, near Madras.

Please scroll down to the Tamil section for these pictures.
