Greenery of the Chola country

Koneri raja puram
Tukkaachi

Chola country : An anthology of green, punctuated by concrete, where streams and canals form watery rhymes. Little boys frolic, splashing in the waters, in bowery nooks that filter sunlight; where Nintendo and Playstation are too pricey to surpass the free delights of earth and water. Leaf, tile and cement ceil houses, pumpkins and dish antennas compete as decor, tractors have garages, cranes fish and farmers crane their backs in rice fields.

Cows amble, hens scramble, bulls strut, insects flit, bees bumble, dores dumble, drunks stumble and butterflies flutter by. Shops vend tea, snacks, fruits, betel, plastic goods, jewellery, european and persian fabrics, motorbikes, xerox, cell phone, urea, cement, seeds... It's also astounding how many schools with large buildings there are in small towns. Waves of modernity wash the shores of the medieval and ancient.

Feasting on the greenery is an excellent vacation for the eyes, especially if accustomed to LCD screens, on palm desk and wall.

Guns Germs and Steel

Symbiogenesis - alternate to Darwin's theory of evolution

In the media, especially American, there is often uproar about Creationism, a christian denial of Darwin's theory of evolution. In the Indian media, biology and chemistry are thoroughly ignored. Famous scientists / public speakers especially Richard Dawkins, thunder away with dogmatic militant atheism, as though Christianity were the big challenge to Darwin & Wallace's theory. The views of people like Stephen Jay Gould, who called religion Non-overlapping magisterium, get muted in the public discourse, and his explanations like 'punctuated equilibirium' are generally unknown, as are recent terrific advances in genetics. Meanwhile, in the last HUNDRED years, an alternate set of theories and ideas have cropped up - symbiogenesis, primarily - that seeks to explain missing gaps and illustrates a brilliant mechanism for speciation, which is stunningly ignored in the media, academia, and even intellectual circles, while they bombard us with incomprehensibles like string theory, dark matter and Higgs boson.

For those interested, here is something scientific, from a wonderful scientist. I wish there were some good illustrated talks on the subject. The article may be hard to follow for those who havent read about it, and even more so for those who defend evolution without understanding its elements- in that field I recommend Alfred Russel Wallace's brilliant book "Darwinism" over Darwin's own hard to follow book "Origin of Species."

Update: For an introduction to some of the topics discussed in the above article, I recommend watching these videos on Youtube.

I read Nick Lane's book "Power, Sex, Suicide" a few years back. It explains how mitochondria, which have their genome outside the nucleus of a cell, power the cell, help it respire, and pass on their DNA called mtDNA along via the maternal line to the offspring. Basically the book explained the physics and chemistry of the eukaryotic cell - i.e a cell with a nucleus, and how it differs from a prokaryotic cell - a cell without a nucleus. The formation of nucleus and absorption of mitochondria was a non-evolutionary event, in the Darwinian sense.

This video of Dr Nick Lane illustrates some aspects of the book. Excellent!

This is a much simpler and smaller lecture by same author, Nick Lane, but without pictures, sadly.

ஃப்ரென்சு எழுத்தாளர் ஜுல்ஸ் வெர்ணின் ‘From the Earth to the Moon’ புத்தகத்தை படித்துவருகிறேன்.

தவறல்ல – ஜேம்ஸ் வாட்ஸனின்  “Double Helix”, ஜாரட் டைமண்டின்  “Guns Germs and Steel”, தாமஸ் ஹாகரின் “The Alchemy of Air”, அயேன் மெக்கலனின் “Darwin’s Armada”,  ஜென்னி அக்லோவின் “Lunar Men” போன்றவை, கதை படிக்கும் வேகமும் ரசிக்க வைக்கும் புதுமையும் மிரளவைக்கும் சாதனையும் சாலக்கலந்த சுவையுள்ளனவே.

‘From the Earth to the Moon’ நூலின் முன்னுரையில், நூலை மொழிப்பெயர்த்த எடுவர்ட் ராத் என்பவரின் ஒரு பத்தி, இங்கே, என் தமிழில்:

An evening with Pamela and John Davis

This is one of the emails that prompted Badri Seshadri to ask me to begin a blog. Better late than never.

Balu sir, Jayaram, John Davis, Chitra Madhavan

At the end of my lecture at New College, an English gentleman walked up to me and said he had talked to Mortimer Wheeler (who discovered the Indus valley civilzation) and had a friend who had inherited some of Alexander Cunningham's collections! Naturally, my curiosity was piqued, and thanks to Dr. Chitra Madhavan, I got his phone number. On Wednesday, Feb 27, 2013, some of us went to meet him at Madras Club where he was staying - Swaminathan, Balasubramanian, Siva, Chitra, Jayaram and Gopu.

His name is John Davis and he was there with his wife Pamela, and they had a room facing the Adayar river. "Would you be mother and pour out tea?" Mrs Davis said to Chitra, in a tone and naturality that would drive every Indian feminist up the wall. :-)

He said he had been a boxwallah, who had come to India in 1946, when the nation was in turmoil, but Madras was a little more peaceful in those days. He is Welsh, original name Daffyd, but the English misspelt & mispronounced it as Davis! Instead of Cunningham or Wheeler, we learnt quite a bit about the intricacies and idiosyncrasies of the Welsh language, its unique grammar and spelling and modifications. Double letters sound different from single letters : "ff" is prononuced "v", "LL" is pronounced "sh", etc. Also, the word "Guin" which stands for the color white is used commonly in names of Welsh girls, and the names always mean something elaborate and poetic : for example, Guinevere, means "a lady in whose footsteps white flowers blossom!" Rather like Tamil towns which are named after trees, Mr Davis, remarked - a fact not many Tamils are aware of. Prof Swaminathan made some comments about the great difficulties he had in trying to follow Welsh, when he was in the UK, to which Davis retorted that English face the same difficulties too!

Davis also gave us a tour-de-force of the origins of the English peoples:
  • how some of them had settled Brittany, a province in France; and a number of them came back to Britain
  • how there had been a similar population settled in Iberia (Spain) in the Galician province and remigration to Britain
  • how every wave of invasion drove the previously settled populations into hills and forests
  • how the early Romans finished of the Druids of their time; the Druids were the priests and medicine men of pre-Roman Britain, who ceremonies included human sacrifices and head shrinking; less adorable than the Druids we may be familiar with in Asterix comics
  • how the end of the Roman empire effected a collapse and regrouping of British society
  • how this must be similar to the Aryan invasion of India overwhelming the Dravidian, and the Dravidian invasion into India must have overwhelmed the Munda speaking tribes and hill-dwellers - a red herring to several people, I'm sure :-)

He then talked of his early in days in Madras, when they would bicycle from the beach to Gemini circle, and leave their bicycles there unlocked, with no fear of their getting stolen! Of swims in the Adayar river, and boat rides and races on it, with rented boats from the boat club. The Adayar river was clean those days he says, the water transparent, with lots of fishing, but the Kuvam was dirty and smelly even then. There was a British lady who would throw weekend parties at here estate near Guindy, with food and dancing, but charge a nominal amount, and vast sections of English society, even the governor sometimes, would attend those.

In all this, a genuine love of Madras, and of several things Indian, came shining through.

Wheeler delivered a set of lectures on Indus valley on BBC, he said. (If we can get this, it may be useful for our site seminar.) His wife said they had also met Max Mallowan, the husband of Agatha Christie. Mallowan was an archaeologist in Iraq - reflected in a couple of Chritie's novels. Mr Davis himself had one of Cunningham's books in his house in Malaysia, but his servant could not locate it. The Indian govt had asked all foreigners to register after the Mumbai 26/11 attacks and hotels had to submit daily reports.

All this was peppered liberally with British understatement and self effacing humour, that we associate with a Wodehousian world.

We finished the evening with his rendering of a Welsh song, with his wife joining in. The mosquitoes had begun to swarm, and Mr Davis had already suffered dengue twice. As a parting shot, Mr Davis said he wished he were young enough to join us next year for our site seminar at Gujarat, especially Dholavira; his wife sportingly invited us to take him along!!

Indian Literature - Four hundred Shakespeares, zero Jules Vernes

Reading Jules Verne's book, From the Earth to the Moonit struck me what a detailed knowledge of science and engineering he brought into his novels and how he did not hesitate to showcase it to the reader. No attempt to dilute it to the ignorance of the lay reader, only an invitation to share in the exhilaration of new knowledge, of building something, attempting something beyond the imagination, let alone the skill of our ancestors. In Indian literature, be it Sanskrit or Tamil or any of the other languages, we have plenty of dramatic, romantic, valorous, humorous, delightful, imaginative, cunning, brilliant, honorable stories, but nothing to rival this. To be fair, I don't know how many other languages have this kind of writing. Even in English most of what passes for science fiction is unscientific fantasy, with honorable exceptions like Arthur C Clarke and perhaps Larry Niven. Even the French language is only famous for social criticism like Victor Hugo, philosophical works ala Camus, Sartre, Balzac or adulterous domestic drama ala Gustave Flaubert.

Here is a passage from Edward Roth's introduction to Jules Verne's, 'From the Earth to the Moon' :

The elements usually considered indispensable in the ordinary novel, were totally absent. There was no killing, no betraying, no persecution, no heart breaking, no courtly pageantsy, no metaphysical speculations, no mystery, no complicated plot, no thrilling descriptions, no fine writing, no photographic sketches of real life, no turning the human heart inside out, no apotheosis of nastiness - and still the story was profoundly and absorbingly interesting.

Can we say this of any Indian writing?

We have plenty of Shakespeares and Molieres and Walter Scotts and Dickenses and Scherezades and Homers and Omar Khayyams and Wordsworths and Shelleys, in Indian literature. But zero Jules Vernes. Also zero Conan Doyles / Agatha Christies. That is a pity.

Thomas Edison and Karl Benz

December 31, 1879 is famous as the day Thomas Edison showcased his electric light bulb in Menlo Park, New Jersey, triggering in the Age of Electricity. But, it is also the day, according to Valcav Smil, that Karl Benz first drove a carriage fitted with his internal combustion engine. Surely then, one of the most significant dates in history.

I stumbled upon it, when I was reading Smil's book "Creating the Twentieth Century." It is a fascinating book, by a terrific author, but not an easy read for the general public. It requires a decent knowledge of engineering, and also a passion for understanding the most understated impact of engineering as a force in history, far surpassing politics, philosophy, art or economics.

Decoding Rajasimha

On Sunday, September 29, 2013, I brought my Devanagari transliteration of RajaSimha Pallava's grantham inscription on the wall of the Kailsanatha temple, to Sri Balasubramanian's sanskrit class. The class finished at 2, lunch at 3 and for the next few hours, he tried to fit the inscription to Sanskrit chanda metres, and filled up missing letters with guesses. We got most of it except the last portion which is really damaged. Here is one such verse, with original grantha inscription and Devanagari captions. Incidentally there were a few spelling mistakes in the inscription :-) Here below is the sloka in Roman script.
